Together, we can transform more lives!
Oxfam Hong Kong (OHK) has been working in Mainland China since 1987, focusing on vulnerable groups such as smallholder farmers, ethnic minorities, women, children, and migrant populations. As of March 2024, we have allocated over HKD 1.8 billion to implement more than 4,100 disaster relief and poverty alleviation projects in 31 provinces, municipalities and regions, reaching around 15 million people.
The Chinese government has made significant progress in poverty reduction, but the wealth gap remains substantial. The World Bank reported a Gini coefficient of 0.45 for China in 2023, indicating considerable income disparity. Many vulnerable groups in inland provinces and remote areas—such as rural families, left-behind elderly, women, children, and urban migrants—continue to live in "relative poverty" and need support.
Poverty is closely linked to climate change, disasters, child protection, and gender equality. We believe that in the coming decades, "social and economic inequality" will remain a critical challenge, especially regarding how vulnerable groups adapt to climate change and the growth and integration of their children.
OHK values collaboration with all parties. We received the Jinju Award (previously known as the 'Kumquat Award') from the China Foundation Evaluation Index three times (in 2015, 2018, and 2020). This award is the highest recognition of our contributions to NGO development in Mainland China.
