On 1 November 2012, the conference ‘Sustainable Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investment: Opportunities and Challenges’ was held in Beijing and was organised by the Center for Human and Economic Development Studies at Peking University and with the support of Oxfam Hong Kong. About 30 delegates attended including officials from the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, Renmin University of China, China Agricultural University, Foreign Economic and Trade University, Yunnan University, Yunnan Agricultural University, China Investment Corporation, and China Development Foundation. The purpose of the conference was to facilitate dialogue among Chinese outward foreign direct investment stakeholders.

Since the Chinese government formally embarked on its Going Out strategy in the early 2000s, Chinese corporations’ outward foreign direct investment has made a positive impact on the socio-economic development in the poorer countries that have received the investment. However, there remains room for improvement, particularly on corporate social responsibility, and in terms of environmental protection, sustainable development, labour rights protection, and adherence to local laws.

During the conference, representatives actively engaged in discussions and offered constructive suggestions on how to promote sustainable outward foreign direct investment, improve corporations’ social responsibility and engage stakeholders in the process.
