The 2025 Oxfam Rice Event continues under the theme "Fight Climate Change, Empower Smallholder Farmers." The campaign will span multiple weekends across Hong Kong – May 10–11, 18, and 25 – with parallel events in Macau on May 24–25. The funds raised are used to support Oxfam's poverty alleviation and development programmes for communities living in poverty worldwide, including efforts to address climate change challenges, improve their livelihoods, and achieve long-term self-reliance.

Smallholder Farmers Pay the Price for the Climate Crisis
The intensifying extreme weather caused by climate change is exacerbating global food crises, poverty, and inequality. However, the greatest victims are smallholder farmers who contribute the least to carbon emissions.
According to the latest UN “State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” report, around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023 – equivalent to one in eleven people globally and one in five in Africa – while over 2.3 billion people worldwide experienced moderate to severe food insecurity.
The world's richest 10% – caused crop losses through their carbon emissions between 1990 and 2019 that could have provided enough calories to feed a staggering 48.2 million people annually. Even more striking is the economic damage inflicted on low- and lower-middle-income countries from the consumption emissions of the world's super-rich 1% over three decades (1990–2023), which is about three times the climate finance provided by developed countries*.

Extreme weather increasingly threatens the survival of smallholder farmers, fishermen, and herders. These food producers not only bear the direct impacts but also lack the capital and training to improve their resilience. Addressing the effects of climate change on vulnerable communities is crucial for eliminating poverty.

Support for Farmers in mainland China: Reducing Disaster Risk and Adapting to Climate Change
“I hope to become more climate-resilient and increase my income through eco-farming and livestock raising,” Wang says.
Wang Xiuying, 73, resides in Liugou Village, Shaanxi Province. She cultivates an acre of land with tea, rice, maize, and vegetables. In recent years, heavy rains have devastated her crops and threatened the livelihoods of the villagers. Granny Wang’s grandson, a migrant worker, has seen his income decline due to the economic downturn, making life even more challenging for the family.
Oxfam supports Wang and other villagers in Liugou Village to improve their lives and income. Our work includes setting up a disaster preparedness committee and implementing disaster risk reduction measures, disseminating the techniques to grow low-carbon tea, and improving the village's ecological environment to enhance its resilience against natural disasters.

Vermicomposting Project in Ethiopia: An Organic Farming Technique to Improve Crop Yields
After adopting vermicomposting, Abdi successfully grew high-quality maize, onions, avocados, coffee, and wheat. Both the quality and quantity of his crops showed significant improvement.
Abdi and other smallholder farmers in Ethiopia have been severely impacted by climate change, with erratic rainfall causing soil erosion and reduced fertility, leading to decreased crop productivity.
OHK has supported the introduction of vermicomposting in Ethiopian communities. Vermicomposting is an eco-friendly method of producing nutritious compost by introducing worms into organic waste. In this process, the worms break down minerals in the organic material, and their manure is rich in nutrients that enhance soil fertility.
After adopting vermicomposting, Abdi successfully grew high-quality maize, onions, avocados, coffee, and wheat. Both the quality and quantity of his crops showed significant improvement. Now, Abdi earns approximately HK$12,000 annually – a 40% increase – creating a path toward sustainable livelihood.

Rice Tech Project in Cambodia: Growing High-Quality Organic Rice
In Cambodia, 90% of the poor population live in rural areas, with 4.5 million people near the poverty line. Rice farming employs over 20% of the working population, yet limited access to modern techniques results in low-quality yields, restricting farmers' ability to earn better incomes.
Through partnerships with rice manufacturers, local NGOs, and agricultural departments, Oxfam is transforming smallholder farming by providing quality seeds, modern tools, and facilities for organic rice and rice-fish farming. This holistic approach, combined with organic certification, has created new market opportunities.
In 2024, the programmes trained 856 farmers in organic farming methods, with 787 earning certifications. This success has strengthened agricultural cooperatives, empowered farmers with economic skills, and ensured quality control and supply chain transparency.
