The Oxfam TowerRun, which takes place annually at the Macau Tower – the tallest building in the city, is a fundraising sports event that Oxfam in Macau has organised since 2014. The event is widely supported by athletes from Hong Kong and Macau, and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Participants will take up the challenge of running up 1,298 steps from the ground floor of the tower to the adventure deck on the 61st floor. Every step they take not only brings them one step closer to achieving their personal best, but also raises funds for Oxfam's poverty alleviation and development projects, enabling people experiencing poverty to be more resilient in the face of climate change.

Oxfam is committed to making the Oxfam TowerRun a major tourism and sports event in Macau. This year, for instance, the Towerrunning World Association and the Asian-oceanian Vertical Marathon Association officially recognised the Oxfam TowerRun as a 120-point event.

Event Information

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated on 17 October every year. Oxfam hopes to raise public awareness about poverty and inequality on this meaningful day, and encourage all to join the fight against poverty.

The Oxfam TowerRun, which takes place annually at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre – the tallest building in the city, is a fundraising sports event that Oxfam in Macau has organised since 2014; this year marks the event’s 10th anniversary. Participants will take up the challenge of running up 1,298 steps from the ground floor of the tower to the adventure deck on the 61st floor. Oxfam aims to raise funds through this event to support its poverty alleviation work worldwide.

The event includes individual and team relay challenges. Upon raising the minimum donation amount, participants can take part in the individual challenge, or join the team relay through their company or organisation. Not only can participants enjoy this exciting challenge, they can also raise funds to enable vulnerable communities around the world to become more self-reliant and improve their livelihoods.

This year, our event’s Fitness Partner lululemon will provide pre-race fitness and running skills training to participants and the general public.

Every step you take is a step you’re taking to fight climate change with communities experiencing poverty!

Close to 30 million people across East Africa are living in crisis levels of hunger or worse which requires urgent action. This is a 13 per cent increase between April and December 2022. And levels of malnutrition are soaring among children, with 1.9 million children in drought-affected areas projected to experience wasting from severe acute malnutrition in 2023.

Oxfam has been responding with a combination of food and cash for people to meet nutritional needs. We’ve also been supporting their livelihoods and strengthening communities’ resilience, from providing livestock fodder and seeds for drought resistant crops, to building and repairing water and sanitation facilities.

One of the people we reached was Omar, a father of eight: ‘Because of drought, all my cows are now dead … I sold a goat, to pay for school fees for one of the children. Oxfam have changed our lives for better in the last few months by supporting us with cash.’

We responded quickly to the food crisis in East Africa by providing immediate relief. Participants of the Oxfam TowerRun can also help those facing severe drought and the food crisis, as well as poor communities around the world to fight climate change!
