Oxfam Trailwalker 2016 ended with 4,581 people completing the 100 km trail
Oxfam Trailwalker (OTW), Hong Kong’s most popular hiking fundraising event organised by Oxfam Hong Kong (OHK), ended successfully this afternoon when the last two teams (team number 0957 and 1002) crossed the finish line together in Yuen Long at 1:12 pm today, completing the 100 km trail in 47 hours 12 minutes.
Trini Leung, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong, presented certificates to the teams and other supporting organisations at the closing ceremony. This year, 4,581 participants completed the 100 km trail within the required 48 hours, i.e. 89% of all walkers.
Trini Leung said, ‘2016 is a very memorable year as we celebrate OHK’s 40th anniversary and OTW’s 35th anniversary this year. We hope that just as those who have passed on this ‘trailwalking spirit’ to the trailwalkers and they will continue to pass it on to others and, like our theme this year, “Keep on Trailwalking”,’ She continued, ‘You have made it all the way from Sai Kung and have overcome the gruelling 100 km trail through endurance, perseverance and teamwork. Eliminating poverty is a long and arduous journey. It requires the same trailwalking spirit you all demonstrated. With your support, we will be able to help more people escape the reality of poverty and injustice, and ultimately, create a world without poverty.’
Oxfam Trailwalker has become Oxfam Hong Kong's flagship fundraiser and one of the largest fundraising hiking events in Hong Kong. Oxfam aims to raise HK$35 million to support its work in poverty alleviation, disaster relief and policy advocacy in Hong Kong and around the world. Since 1986, more than 93,000 trailwalkers have participated and raised over HK$500 million. The event has successfully developed into an international top-notch fundraiser, challenging walkers in 15 cities in nine countries including Australia, Belgium, England, France, India, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and Hong Kong.
