Oxfam Hong Kong 50th Anniversary Event: More than 200 Participants Join Oxfam Hunger Banquet to Celebrate Half a Century of Collective Action

(Hong Kong, 17 October 2026) Oxfam Hong Kong today held its 50th Anniversary Event on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty under the theme “50 Years of Change, One Enduring Mission: A World Without Poverty”. Partners and supporters from different sectors of society came together to reflect on Oxfam Hong Kong’s 50-year journey in fighting poverty and to look ahead to continued collective action for change.

The ceremony featured the Chairperson of Oxfam Hong Kong Wayne Porritt, Director General Henry Tang, one of the founding members David Hodson and key contributor Anne Hodson, Senior Advisor Bernard Chan, Oxfam Ambassador Raymond Wong and Charity Development Manager of New Beauty Vigor Lau. Together they assembled a tangram puzzle, symbolising the collective strength, vision and commitment of Oxfam’s supporters in building a world without poverty.

In his welcome speech, Wayne Porritt shared how he had witnessed Oxfam transform every donation into tangible improvements in the lives of people facing poverty. Henry Tang, Director General of OHK, said: “Oxfam’s 50-year journey has shown that meaningful change is never achieved by one person alone. It is made possible through the support and partnership of countless people. Across Hong Kong, Chinese mainland and around the world, Oxfam’s poverty alleviation work has created lasting and meaningful impact for communities.”

Bernard Chan reflected on how his connection with Oxfam began through Oxfam Trailwalker in 1993 and encouraged people from all sectors to take action against poverty. “If no one is willing to take the first step, we will never achieve a world without poverty,” he said. Oxfam Ambassador Raymond Wong shared that helping others can begin with everyday actions and grow through collective effort. He also revealed that he will take part in the 20km Oxfam Trailwalker on 21 November to raise funds for Oxfam’s poverty alleviation work. Raymond joined the Oxfam Hunger Banquet with his family on the same day so that they could experience the realities of poverty and unequal resource distribution.

Another highlight of the celebration was the two sessions of the special 50th Anniversary Oxfam Hunger Banquet held in the afternoon. More than 200 members of the public and supporters participated in the event. Through role allocation, interactive games and meal experiences, participants gained first-hand insight into global inequality in resource distribution and reflected on issues including poverty, food security and social equity. One participant commented: “This meal was not only unique, but also deeply educational. It encouraged me to rethink how poverty and inequality affect different groups in society.”

Oxfam Hong Kong sincerely thanks all supporters and partners for their companionship over the past 50 years. Looking ahead, Oxfam will continue working with communities and partners to advance poverty alleviation, humanitarian response and policy advocacy, helping to build a world without poverty.
