Oxfam Trailwalker 2024: Three-Day Event Ends with Participants Walking Against All Odds
The Mega hiking fundraising event Oxfam Trailwalker 2024, organised by Oxfam Hong Kong and sponsored by Futu Securities International (Hong Kong) Limited, officially concluded today (November 17). This year’s event took place in challenging weather conditions, making it one of the most difficult in recent years. Despite the unfavourable weather, 2,877 participants bravely embarked on the 100-kilometer challenge, showcasing their resilience and selfless support for charity. In the end, 2,022 participants successfully completed this arduous challenge. Additionally, the newly introduced "40th Anniversary Edition" route attracted 1,211 participants at the start, with 581 ultimately finishing the event.
For the 100km route, the champion team, number 8049, completed in 11 hours and 42 minutes, with team members Jeffrey Ian Campbell, Ryan Roger Whelan, Alexandre Francis Bern Neyrinck, Lodewijk Vriens. For the “40th Anniversary Edition” route, the champion team, number 4048, completed in 5 hours and 46 minutes, with team members Tsang Fuk Cheung, Tsang Chun Kit, Chan Ka Keung, Ng Wai Hei.
The last team of 100km route, number 1068, crossed the finish line at Harrow International School Hong Kong in Tuen Mun on 17 November afternoon in 47 hours and 28 minutes.
Ms. Kalina Tsang, Director General, Oxfam Hong Kong said, “Oxfam Trailwalker is celebrating its 40th anniversary milestone. Over the years, it has weathered many ups and downs, all thanks to the perseverance and team spirit of every Trailwalker, volunteer, and staff member who walked this 40-year path together. Although the weather this year was challenging, I am deeply moved to see many Trailwalkers still choose to walk side-by-side against all odds. This precious spirit truly reflects Oxfam's longstanding mission - the fight against poverty is not easy, but your every step is what supports our work. Let's join hands to help more of the impoverished.”
Mr. Michael Wong, Director of Fundraising and Communications, Oxfam Hong Kong said, “Oxfam Trailwalker originally began as a military training exercise for the elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment in Hong Kong. Oxfam Hong Kong later took over the event and it has since become a signature local fundraising hiking challenge that tests the perseverance and unity of all participants. This year, the event was held for three consecutive days under rainy and windy conditions, making it exceptionally challenging - the most difficult in recent years, further testing the physical strength, determination, and teamwork of the Trailwalkers and support teams. I witnessed many Trailwalkers completing this arduous challenge at the finish line, and I'm immensely proud of their indomitable spirit. Even for those who could not finish, we sincerely thank them for their participation and effort. I look forward to walking even stronger together with all of you in the coming year. See you on the trail!”
Mr. Sze, teacher of Hong Chi Lions Morninghill School, has led students to participate in Oxfam Trailwalker for 12 consecutive years. This year, he guided four high school students with mild intellectual disabilities and autism from a special school to form a team and participate in the event before graduation, completing the 100-kilometer route in 46 hours and 46 minutes. Mr. Si expressed, "This year has been the most profound experience. The rain made the trail conditions very poor and muddy, almost like walking on butter. The accompanying teachers held the students' hands as they descended step by step. As they gradually built their confidence, they were able to move forward on their own, learning to avoid injury when they fell, allowing them to get back up and continue. Our progress was slower than expected, and we had very little sleep over the two nights. One student even developed six or seven blisters on his feet and had to endure the pain. The students showed remarkable determination; even when facing difficulties, they never considered giving up, and in the end, we all safely achieved our goal together."
This year’s newly introduced "40th Anniversary Edition" route attracted many new participants, including Oxfam ambassador Andy Leung Chiu Fung and artist Melody Ma, who teamed up and completed the challenge in 14 hours and 10 minutes. Leung expressed, "I am grateful to Oxfam Hong Kong for the invitation, which gave me the courage to participate in this unforgettable journey as a walker. Along the way, we faced rain and countless muddy paths, especially during the second and third downhill sections of the MacLehose Trail, which were the most challenging for me. However, I encountered a team of visually impaired participants who bravely persevered on the difficult uphill trails. Their determination deeply moved me and inspired my teammates and me to continue and complete the entire route. When we finally reached the finish line, I truly understood the spirit of perseverance embodied by all walkers, and I felt proud that my team and I successfully finished the race."
Artist James Ng and Alvin Ng Fu Kiu participated in Oxfam Trailwalker for the second consecutive year, completing the 100km route with their teammates in 32 hours and 53 minutes. Alvin Ng said: "I actually found this year's Trailwalker more challenging than last year. The rain made the ground very slippery, and walking on muddy paths was more dangerous than usual and required much more energy. Along the way, we had to watch out for each other and ensure no teammates would fall - everyone showed great teamwork. Although our final time differed from our expectation by one to two hours, being able to complete the trail together after the typhoon, with no one getting injured, was already exceeding our expectations. We also want to thank our support teams and our wives for their unwavering support throughout the rain, ensuring we had sufficient supplies to keep going. I hope to participate again next year."

Oxfam Trailwalker (previously called “Trailwalker”) began in Hong Kong in 1981 as a military training exercise for the elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment. Along with the retreat of the Gurkhas in 1997, Oxfam Hong Kong took over the event, which has since become Hong Kong's largest fundraising hiking event.
Oxfam Trailwalker 2024 starts in Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung, and finishes at Harrow International School Hong Kong in Tuen Mun. Teams of four must complete the 100km MacLehose Trail and other connecting sections within 48 hours. This year also features a shorter, special 40th-anniversary route.
