At present, 330 million people around the world face severe food insecurity every day and have to go to bed hungry. Ironically, the majority of them are smallholder farmers, fishermen, herders and landless farm labourers who produce food. Due to insufficient capital or lack of training, these smallholder farmers are often compelled to use outdated production tools and techniques, and their productivity has remained stagnant for a long period of time. This makes it difficult for them to increase their efficiency and improve their livelihoods.

Smallholder Farmers
Climate change has emerged as one of the most serious causes of famine, poverty and inequity. As global temperatures rise, extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and storms are becoming more frequent and intense. While the poor are not the main contributors to climate change, they disproportionately bear the impact of natural disasters. The richest 1 percent of the world's population (about 77 million people) produced the same amount of carbon pollution in 2019 as the poorest two-thirds of humanity (about 5 billion people)*!
The richest one per cent of the world’s population accounted for over twice the amount of carbon pollution as the poorest half of humanity (3.1 billion people) between 1990 and 2015. This period witnessed unprecedented emissions growth.* Despite this, climate change hits poor people first and hardest. This climate crisis further deepens poverty and exacerbates injustice.
*According to Oxfam International's 2023 report Climate Equality: A Planet for the 99% released in 2023
15 bags of Oxfam Rice
will receive 6 wall-mounted planting pots and materials needed to build a vertical farm to grow crops in a school in Ethiopia to increase food supply and prevent students from dropping out of school due to starvation
33 bags of Oxfam Rice
Will support 1 Nepalese smallholder farmer to obtain water-saving technologies such as drip and sprinkler irrigation, and to adapt to climate change with greenhouse farming, allowing them to grow crops in extreme weather
135 bags of Oxfam Rice
will support 5 smallholder farmers to grow new climate change adapted crops for one year
Climate Justice
Oxfam empowers smallholder farmers to prepare for disasters and adapt to climate change
Through our projects, we at Oxfam Hong Kong work with smallholder farmers holistically to fight poverty, which is exacerbated by climate change.
Fight climate change, empower smallholder farmers

Centuries of Farming Wisdom Can't Beat Climate Change?
In 2019, Wang Jinzhuang Village experienced a once-in-a-decade drought, and in 2021, it experienced a flood. The consecutive natural disasters have led to severe crop failures in the village. Compounded by the fact that most of the village residents are left-behind women and elderly people, who are less capable of coping with climate change and may lack the determination to fight against it, the terraced fields in the village are gradually disappearing. In response, Oxfam has been supporting local partners since 2019 to help villagers learn to conserve their traditional farming culture and to promote the conservation and sustainable use of agricultural biodiversity. Local women then set up a village group to conduct a census and inventory of the village's farming species, slowly revitalising the terraced fields and agricultural system in the village.
In response, Oxfam has been providing support to local partners since 2019 to assist villagers in preserving their traditional farming practices and promoting the conservation and sustainable utilization of agricultural biodiversity. Subsequently, local women established a village group to conduct a census and inventory of the agricultural species in the area, gradually revitalizing the terraced fields and the agricultural system within the village.

Ethiopian schools establish vertical farms to alleviate malnutrition caused by the food crisis
Oxfam in Ethiopia, in collaboration with local partners, has established a model vegetable gardening site in Atse Libnedingil Pre-primary and primary school. The school is located around a poor urban settlement in the outskirts Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is a government-identified student feeding center, the school has a feeding program and this initiative enabled it to improve the gaps in food security and nutrition and improved Pupils’ capacity to concentrate and assimilate information by reducing short- term hunger. With the funding support of Oxfam Hong Kong, a complete set of drip irrigation technology system including two 5,000 litter water tanks, as well as materials for vertical agriculture and technical farming skills, were provided to support vertical farming in school garden.

Oxfam helps Nepalese smallholder farmers improve their farming techniques to cope with extreme weather, maintain yields and protect incomes.
Climate change in Nepal has resulted in frequent droughts in recent years, affecting local crops. Heera Baht, 27, who heads her family as her husband has migrated to work in India, says that there used to be abundant rainfall in the past, leadingto healthy crop growth. However, over the past three to five years, reduced rainfall has resulted in lower yields compared to before, while pest infestations have increased Through Oxfam's programme, Heera transitioned to potato cultivation, adopting techniques such as greenhouse cultivation and drip irrigation to minimize water usage. Now, even in dry weather, She is now able to maintain her yields and achieve a more income, even during dry weather conditions.
